The Saheed Anurupchandra Mahavidyalaya, Burul was established in 1991 as a co-educational grants-in-aid college affiliated to Caluctta University. It was recognised under sections 2f and 12B by UGC in June 2000.

The college is located in a rural setting about 50 km from the city center of Kolkata, without any of its kind within a radius of 20 km. Being near the edge of a well established metropolitan city, the college has both the advantages and disadvantages typical of the location.
